Welcome back Monarch: Legacy of Monsters lovers,

As season two moves to a cataclysmic conclusion, we have learned many things about the Titans that have come to our reality from their existence in the Axis Mundi. Series viewers learn that the Monarch Sciences Corporation is actually responsible for a devastating attack on San Francisco known as Godzilla Day or “G-Day” that has been featured in the series which is based on the Godzilla monster movie franchise.

Legendary Studios Television production division and Toho Studios, are the creative genius teams involved with the series. Toho is perhaps best known in recent entertainment history for the Godzilla Minus One film released in 2023 as well as the upcoming Godzilla Minus Zero sequel, which is a direct continuation of the epic Monster Verse story arc by Takashi Yamazaki. Series canon is faithful to the Godzilla franchise and is appreciated by science fiction series admirers.

As delineated in our previous analysis of the series, and episodes two, three and four, followed by episodes five, six and seven, season two continues to reveal the secrets of how the Titans, or the Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms known as MUTO’s, have impacted our planet via their manifestation in our reality as a result of the MUTO mysterious development subsequent to the detonation of nuclear devices in the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean after World War Two.

The creators of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters are led by Matt Fraction and Chris Black with exciting episodes in 2026 directed by Hiromi Kamata, Jeff King, Lawrence Trilling and Gandja Monteiro. Each of these talented individuals have brought the series to life on our screens in outstanding fashion.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters main character is Lee Shaw who survived his multi year experience in the Axis Mundi. The Lee Shaw character is witnessed in the present day as well as his younger self in artful flashback sequences dating to his time that resulted from his being trapped in the Axis Mundi that first appeared in our favorite 2023 television series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

Axis Mundi is a world between worlds, it is another dimension where time moves differently and MUTO monsters live out their lives before they escaped to our world via “Rifts” and time distortions between the realities. This often causes death and destruction in our reality.

This season the MUTO destructive rampages resulted in the death of Hiroshi Randa during the fifth episode of the season. Hiroshi was a beloved character who was at the heart of the series story arc. Caught in a confrontation in Santa Soledad when the Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms crossed over from Axis Mundi to our reality, Hiroshi was fatally wounded.

Many have hoped that perhaps Hiroshi could be saved by using the time shifts manifest in utilization of the Axis Mundi. Interestingly, Lee Shaw, thanks to technology invented by Doctor Suzuki, was able to contact his younger self in Axis Mundi. The hopes to save Hiroshi were apparently dashed after viewers observed a heartfelt funeral that was conducted subsequent to his death. I for one still cannot believe that Hiroshi is gone, hoping that perhaps an Axis Mundi time travel event could change the past and save his future life? After all, no one ever dies in science fiction!

Episode Eight Separate Ways:

The eighth episode opens with Lee driving on the Australian coast where he finds Titan-X on the shoreline having what appears to be a nervous breakdown. While Titan-X is observed flailing in the sand, Godzilla has awakened and heads to where Lee and Titan are located in Australia.

As mentioned above, the previous episode highlighted Lee Shaw using Doctor Suzuki technology talking with the younger version of himself when Lee had been trapped in the Axis Mundi.

Episode eight “Separate Ways” spotlights a moment viewers had been waiting for; Godzilla who had been on Skull Island is back from Axis Mundi to confront Titan X. Godzilla is able to track Titan-X who had been distracted from its usual path no doubt influenced by technology from Doctor Suzuki.

Meanwhile Keiko and Cate visit with Director Barris to attempt to figure out the reason why Titan X is not following it’s traditional path. They suspect that Lee Shaw is using technology to lure Godzilla into a confrontation with Titan-X to eliminate the monster. Lee observes Kieko and Cate on an inbound helicopter which crashes subsequent to impacting a large formation of birds.

Lee Shaw rushes to the crash site where Cate and Kieko have fortunately survived. Both argue with Lee that his plan is flawed in general, and in specific that that the Axis Mundi Rifts created by Monarch technology are to blame for having the Titans in our reality. Moreover, the ladies having communicated with Titan-X, as revealed in episode seven are emotionally upset and is likely why Titan-X is so violent. The monsters behavior is directly linked to Monarch meddling with Axis Mundi. After all, wouldn’t anyone be upset if they were ripped away from their home environment?

Meanwhile, Kentaro is witness to what is transpiring and wants to push ahead with the Apex Corporation plan to capture a Titan-X egg. Kentaro eventually relinquishes allowing them to do so, using Apex Corporation technology to take the egg for experimentation purposes.

The episode draws to an exciting conclusion with Godzilla arriving where Titan-X is in Australia. Godzilla immediately begins to attack Titan-X in what could become a brutal battle to close out episode eight. However, something appears to be distracting Godzilla and T-Titan-X that is revealed in episode nine.

Titan-X is relentlessly pursuing the helicopter because her egg was stolen by Keiko, Lee, May, and Tim who attempt to figure out what is behind all of this. Apex Corporation denies any knowledge. But does anyone believe this?

We observe Cate and Kentaro with the team heading to Skull Island. Lee Shaw wonders if they went there on thier own initiative?. Lee is hoping that Godzilla will defeat Titan-X. The two Titans stop swimming and face off against each other but Godzilla doesn’t attack Titan-X. Keiko suggests this is due to Godzilla realizing he did what was needed, make certain that Titan X returned to Skull Island where she was supposed to be.

Monarch Legacy of Monsters S2x09 Kieko and young Bill Anders face the facts

Viewers are treated to a revealing flashback to the past where Bill  is discussing Rifts with Kieko. Bill and Keiko are married married by a Justice of the Peace. This scene confirms that they initiated the Titans arrival in our reality that caused everything. Viewers already knew this, but the scene validates the facts for everyone involved in the creation of Rifts and the manifestation of Titan MUTO’s in our reality that led to G-Day.

Meanwhile on Skull Island, Isabel, Cate and Kentaro are at an old Monarch facility that Isabel’s team is using as a base. Their plan is to use a tracking device they placed on Titan-X to show them where a stable rift is located on Skull island. They plan to use the Rift to send terminally ill people to Axis Mundi to extract them after various periods of time. Their theory is that the extracted people could return subsequent to sufficient time passing when cures for their fatal illnesses may become available.

Cate asks “You want to exploit Axis Mundi as your personal time machine?” Cate implores Kentaro to refuse to cooperate. It is obvious at this point that Kentaro plans to use the time traveling stable Rift to bring their father Hirohsi back from the dead by ensuring that the event that killed him never happens. Kentaro plans to move ahead with his plan and refuses to answer Cate.

Tim stumbles on a creatures leg on Skull Island waking the slumbering monster. It is here that they discover that there are multiple monsters on the island. During the execution of the plan four people are killed before Titan-X even arrives on Skull Island. It becomes apparent that various monsters including “Vinestranglers” who have have been using the stable Rift to travel back and forth from Axis Mundi and different time periods in our reality on the island.

Monarch Legacy of Monsters S2x09 Lee Shaw deals with the reality of what has happened

Flashback to Kazakhstan in 1959. Bill is refusing to leave without saving Keiko. Young Lee Shaw is certain that Kieko is dead. However, Bill believes she might have located a place to hide. As we now know, Kieko did survive with young Lee stating “This is going to haunt us for the rest of our lives”. Les’s outburst is prescient since we know that the trouble they created was all related to when they went to Axis Mundi and Lee traveled in time to the present day.

A later flashback to 1968 sets the foundation for the season two finale. In 1968 Bill is delivering a lecture about his discovery of quantum entanglements, or what he calls “Rifts” where MUTO’s are using them to time travel between Axis Mundi whenever they want to. Along the way, the team finds dozens of probes sent by Doctor Suzuki that are marked with many different years proving that time travel is a real event.

When Titan-X arrives on Skull Island Isobel and Kentaro have setup a trap using the map Cate found. The team uses anesthetic gas to knock the creature out. Their plan is to use Titan-X to find the stable Rift. In the meantime, Lee and Kieko are searching for the stable Rift that has been allowing Titan movement between various time periods. No doubt they plan to use the stable Rift in an attempt to fix what has happened since the initial destructive emergence of the MUTO’s.

This factor which was revealed in the second to last episode of season two establishes that the season two finale “Where We Belong” will definitely deal with time travel. The question is how will our timeline be impacted? Could the incident that killed Hiroshi and many others be averted? Will G-Day and the destruction of San Francisco never happen? Tune in for the season two finale when all the questions may be answered!
