Merger History of Entertainment Studios:
This section will focus on the rise of streaming services that have grown as a result of entertainment studio mergers that began with Comcast expressed interest in purchasing NBC Universal from General Electric in 2009. Occurring in 2011, but not completed until 2013, NBC layoffs happened in employees in New York, Burbank and other locations. The cumulative effect total over the past two years caused some 42,000 employee layoffs. On January 02, 2026 Comcast realized that they made a mistake, deciding to spin off entertainment products from their core Internet products forming a new company known as Versant.
The latest acquisition is the Paramount Warner Brothers Discovery merger, the latest merger in the entertainment industry that began over 100 years ago when a studio war over the acquisition of movie theaters broke out to control distribution of their products to the general public.
This situation continued for approximately several decades until the entertainment industry landscape embraced other distribution methods to capture the revenue of movie film products. Over the decades since then, many changes occurred with a focus to television entertainment in the 1950’s. Beginning in the 1980’s, with the advent of video cassettes, laser disks, DVD’s and later, Blue Ray disks, entertainment studios switched focus to acquiring each other beginning with the famous Sony purchase of Columbia Pictures in 1989.

Since then the “Big Five”, as noted below has been in turmoil with billions in losses. The history of Hollywood studio mergers is marked by significant consolidation, particularly among the major studios formerly known as the “Big Five”: Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Warner Brothers Pictures, Walt Disney Studios, and Sony Pictures. The Paramount Skydance acquisition of Warner Brothers Discovery has resulted in a new distribution product named ParamountPlus with Showtime.
Over the years, many smaller studios have been absorbed by these giants, leading to a market where few companies dominate film production and distribution. It’s still a Big Five with Netflix which started as a DVD rental company to producing it’s own content beginning with the successful “House of Cards” series in 2013.

TeamWHR will also focus in this article on the Warner Brothers Discovery “Max” streaming service also known in some regions as “HBO Max” that is now part of Paramount Skydance Corporation.

Thankfully the future of Paramount Plus is no longer in doubt now that Skydance Media confirmed that it wants to purchase Paramount Studios and their Paramount Plus streaming service . This merger was recently completed is now known as ParamountPlus with Showtime. Rounding out the “streaming elephants in the room” in the digital entertainment world. In this article regarding streaming platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Disney Plus, Hulu, MGM+, Netflix, Paramount Plus, Peacock, Sling, Crackle TV, and other streaming services such as Tubi which does not charge a fee, but instead relies on advertising in the movies and programs they offer.
Our previous articles focused on the fact that streaming services are now virtually the only places to watch pure scripted science fiction genre series since the major United States networks have apparently abandoned the SciFi genre for the time being. Our first article focused published on June 20, 2024 about Amazon MGM Studios two streaming services Prime Video and MGM Plus. Since that time, one of our favorite science fiction series “Stargate” has not been renewed by Amazon for a new season. On July 02, 2024 our second streamer article focused on Netflix, Apple TV, and AMC Plus.
Nevertheless, further complicate the situation, a State level lawsuit has been filed against Paramount acquisition of Warner Brothers Discovery. While the effect of this lawsuit will likely delay the situation, it is a further expression of governmental dissatisfaction of the studio mergers.
