The second season of The Librarians: The Next Chapter is simply superb! The series follows the adventures of time traveling individuals known as “Librarians” traveling to various locations in history in order to save the world from the potential dangers and chaos associated with the use of magical artifacts.
This season Dean Devin, Showrunner and Executive Producer of The Librarians: The Next Chapter, featured a superb cast including Callum McGowan who portrays Vikram Chamberlain, Jessica Green who portrays Charlie Cornwall, Olivia Morris who portrays Lysa Pascal, and Bluey Robinson who portrays Connor Green. Joining this wonderful cast is Caroline Loncq as Elaine Astolat, the caretaker of The Librarians Library Annex.
Christian Kane portrays Jacob Stone, and Lindy Booth who portrays Cassandra Cillian both return as guest stars from the original series The Librarians that broadcast forty-two episodes across four season from 2014 to 2018.
The second season featured outstanding guest stars such as Dominic Monaghan portraying the character Merlin that he began at the end of the first season. Dominic was featured in four episodes of the second season beginning with “And the Burning Heart”, followed by “And Descarts Dilemma”, “And What Dreams May Come” and the season two finale “And the Camelot Conundrum”.
Also featured in season two are two legendary performers; Richard Kind as the voice of Percy the puppet in “And the Last Resort”, and the explorer Josh Gates, famous for his Expedition Unknown and Destination Truth programs. A fun part is he portrayed himself in the eleventh episode “And What Dreams May Come” helping our heroes identify artifacts. Below please find analysis of our five favorite episodes from season two and hope you enjoy the series as much as we do.
And the Burning Heart:
Subsequent to Merlin being freed from the Court of King Arthur at the end of season one, we find Merlin helping our heroes deal with the disappearance of students at a high school. The investigation reveals that a Rage Demon known as a Bes Monster is the culprit. The Bes Monster feeds on the anger of human beings, is directly responsible for the strange situation at the school.
Our heroes begin to become affected themselves until Merlin helps them deal with the Rage Demon and return the Bes Monster to the magic case that was designed to contain it. Based on Merlin’s behavior, we suspect that he is still full of mischief that will be revealed in the upcoming episodes of season two.
And Descarts Dilemma:
Previously Mrs. Astolat had fortunately captured Merlin and tied him up while so our heroes could deal with their bodies being swapped, their next dilemma (pun intended). Caused by a magic bracelet, the episode revolves around the body swapping that generates a great deal of confusion coupled with personal characteristics of our heroes while encountering the missing bracelets of the legendary immortals Castor and Pollux.
The acting talents of the actors portraying other heroes are outstanding as each must exhibit the behavior of each other leading to fantastically fun antics throughout the episode when their bodies are swapped.
And the Last Resort:
In the eight episode we find out that our Librarians are on vacation to a location that Vikram had visited in the distant past. While there our heroes discover a magical, yet evil enchantment at the historic Marionette Resort that has existed for two hundred years. We learn that the Marionette is the home of a famous puppet theater. Unfortunately, our heroes encounter an evil puppet named Percy who is plotting to destroy the resort. The evil Percy voice is instantly recognizable, none other than the legendary actor Richard Kind .
The story ends well when the puppeteer realizes that Percy the Puppet has been controlling things and decides to give the magically evil puppet to the Librarians for safe storage in the Library Annex with Charlie sealing the evil thing in a storage case.
And What Dreams May Come:
The Librarians face a new yet unique challenge when they receive an alarming call from Merlin about nightmarish events being brought to life. This leads viewers to believe that Merlin has overcome his mischievous nature. I for one have doubts about Merlin’s motives. Our heroes arrive in a town where they find a demon named Alû who has put everyone to sleep. The result is everyone becomes trapped in a shared dreamscape utilizing the characters own fears forcing them to confront their own individual nightmares.
The eleventh episode “And What Dreams May Come” is my favorite of season two. Why? Because a real life character, Josh Gate, the famous explorer of historic events, portrays himself! His presence in the episode adds a sense of realism. Ultimately, Josh’s character knows Connor ending up helping our heroes find out details about the serious situation they will face in the episode.
And the Camelot Conundrum:
The second season finale is the climatic conclusion of an exciting two part episode that began with “And What Dreams May Come”. The finale sets the stage for (hopefully) a third season of the series with Merlin finally revealing his true intentions; to use magic rewrite history to his own advantage. If our heroes are not successful, they will find themselves as mere pawns in Merlin’s putrid power grab that could likely erase all of them from the new timeline.
As mentioned previously, Merlin, believes that he, rather than King Arthur must reset everything to match his beliefs about past history claiming the Sword in the Stone and Camelot for himself. As viewers watch the events unfold, each of our heroes are killed and Camelot is destroyed.
Fortunately, The Librarians had correctly figured out that Merlin, corrupted by his abuse power over the centuries, would require first hand exposure that his plans were imperfect. Our heroes had actually placed Merlin in a dreamscape to demonstrate that his plans for changing the past would result in a nightmare for all concerned. Thankfully Merlin learns his lesson, finally forestalling use of magic to obtain power. The episode ends with Merlin becoming an analyst working to help categorize dangerous artifacts in The Library Annex!
Since the season two premiere on TNT, the series scored 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. We agree, suggesting that If you have not watched the series, you do so at Electric Entertainment or TNT to enjoy the adventures in this wonderful series. In closing for now, we hope that The Librarians: The Next Chapter will be renewed for a third season next year!
