He has made us laugh, and he has made us bawl our eyes out. He also deserves a medal for having Rodney McKay as his best friend! The current Carson Beckett may be a copy, but there\u2019s only one Paul McGillion!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">Paul started out by giving us a little bit of a lesson about his history with the Stargate franchise. \u201cI was on Stargate SG-1 in \u2018Torment of Tantalus\u2019 when I was a much younger fellow [we cheer, so Paul repeats in his Scottish accent] <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">much younger<\/em>. Playing Dr. Earnest Littlefield, and he was the first person to ever do through the Stargate, from what I believe [Um, of modern man, yes!]. So that\u2019s kind of cool. And then I also wondered, since I had a lot of friends in Vancouver cuz I\u2019m originally from Canada and I spend a lot of time here [Canadians cheer, and Paul uses his accent again to say] <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Thank you<\/em>. So I spend a lot of time here, so I wondered, \u2018How come I can\u2019t go back on the show? It seems like these guys go on the show, they get to come back a couple seasons later as a different character.\u2019 I always wondered why I never had the opportunity to come back on the show. \u2018Was there something wrong? What\u2019s going on?\u2019 And when I read for Atlantis and fortunately got the part, I talked to Martin Wood about it and he goes, \u2018No no, you don\u2019t understand the fan base that the show has\u2019, and I\u2019m like, \u2018Really?\u2019. He\u2019s like, \u2018You\u2019ll see\u2019. I think that\u2019s what I did.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">\u201cThey wanted an international flavor to the character, and the casting director at the time said to my agent, \u2018what accent is Paul doing to do?\u2019 and my agent called me and said, \u2018what accent is Paul going to do?\u2019 and I said, I read the script, especially the pilot and I thought \u2013 I was born in Scotland \u2013 \u2018I feels Scottish to me. He just has a comedic sensibility, you know the chair scene and everything\u2019. That was one of the audition scenes I had to do. I said, \u2018I think he\u2019s Scottish, I feel he\u2019s Scottish\u2019, and she called them and said, \u2018He\u2019s Scottish.\u2019 The casting director said \u2018No no no. Don\u2019t do a Scottish accent. No one will understand him.\u2019 To which I said to my agent, \u2018Well there are educated Scottish people as well. They do have doctors (his fingers make quotation marks) in Scotland\u2019. So I think he watched Train Spotting one too many times. So basically I said, \u2018No, I think he\u2019s Scottish.\u2019 He said, \u2018Tell him to do an English accent. I want him to do an English accent.\u2019 So she called me and said, \u2018Do an English accent. He wants an English accent\u2019 and I said, \u2018No, I\u2019m doing a Scottish accent.\u2019 So I went to the casting trailer \u2013 you guys have had the set tour. It\u2019s that trailer when you go in, there\u2019s two little trailers sort of stuck in the ground. That\u2019s where everyone auditions for the show.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>And it\u2019s tiny and it\u2019s kind of weird because you can hear the actors auditioning, and it\u2019s no bigger than this stage. Literally. The room we audition in is just about the size of this half right here (spits the stage in half with a hand motion).<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>So went in and did the audition again in front of the casting agent \u2013 he\u2019s a great guy, by the way \u2013 and he says to me, \u2018so what are you going to do?\u2019 I said, \u2018I\u2019m going to do an educated Scottish accent\u2019.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>He\u2019s like, \u2018(shaking his head) Ok.\u2019 He wasn\u2019t very happy with that. So I did the first scene and he said, \u2018(grudgingly) Ok that was good.\u2019 And then I did the second scene and he goes, \u2018(still a little grudgingly) Ok very good.\u2019 And then I did the last scene and he goes, \u2018ok that was good. Get out.\u2019 And I was the first one cast, I believe, on the show. <!--more--><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">\u201cThen, out of the first season, I was in 17 out of the 20 episodes. And then half way through the second they said, \u2018we\u2019d really like you to be a regular on the series\u2019, and then that happened. It <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>was really nice. A lot of it was to the fan response, so when I say that honestly they do because as a character they didn\u2019t even know what was going to happen, and he seemed to strike a cord with a lot of the fans, to become a regular on the series. I thank you guys for that, because without this unique fan base that Stargate has, we all wouldn\u2019t be here and I wouldn\u2019t see a lot of the same familiar faces that I\u2019ve seen in London and in Paris and in Australia, in Ireland, and places like that. So it\u2019s just a great franchise and it\u2019s a great community that you guys have here. It\u2019s so nice to see so many people having a great time. And I come to these things and it\u2019s \u2013 some people watch football, or soccer, hockey, (gestures towards us) scifi! That\u2019s what you guys do! I love it!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">\u201cYou know I\u2019m one of seven kids, six boys one girl. And ah, God bless her. She\u2019s in the middle, too. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Yeah, her boyfriends didn\u2019t have a good time at our house. When I first started acting my dad is like, &#8211; because I had a teaching degree \u2013 \u2018(in his Scottish accent, but with his voice pitched lower than usual) You\u2019re a bloody teacher. Teach for God\u2019s sakes. What\u2019s with this acting gig you\u2019re doing?\u2019 I say, \u2018Dad, I love it!\u2019 and he goes, \u2018(accented) What kind of game are you playing at? What is this? Teach! You\u2019re a teacher! Teach!\u2019 I said, \u2018well Dad, I really like it\u2019 and I started getting a couple jobs, moved to Vancouver, got a job on the X-Files, and he said, \u2018(accented) Well that\u2019s fantastic, that you talk to other shows. How much do you make doing that?\u2019 and I told him and he goes, \u2018well that\u2019s fantastic, that acting! Great stuff!\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">Paul<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">then told us about his first read through session for the Pilot episode of Atlantis. \u201cI feel like this is whoo! This is big for me. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>So we\u2019re all sitting around a table, pleasantries, shaking hands and stuff. And in the Pilot, you recall, I have one of the first lines. It\u2019s like, \u2018(accented) I\u2019m not bloody getting into that chair\u2019 \u2013 that sort of thing. I can\u2019t remember the lines exactly, but to that effect. And we talked for maybe 15 minutes and then Martin Wood, the director, said, \u2018ok we\u2019re going to start the read now\u2019.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>And Joe [Flanigan] is like two people down from me, and I remember I had one of the first lines and everyone\u2019s sitting around like, \u2018ok we\u2019re going to start\u2019,<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>and I\u2019m like, \u2018(accented) I\u2019m not getting intot that bloody chair, for God\u2019s sakes!\u2019 and I could just see everybody go like this (leans forward as if over a table and turns to look down it\u2019s length) to look at me. Because nobody knew I was doing a Scottish accent. Ans I could see Joe just going, \u2018(craning to see, and doing a pretty good imitation of Joe\u2019s voice) Is that a Scottish accent?!\u2019 Wait a second (Paul spikes up his hair). \u2018Is that a Scottish accent?!\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">Someone asked a question about filming David Hewlett\u2019s A Dog\u2019s Breakfast. If you haven\u2019t seen it, you need too. If you love seeing actor\u2019s your familiar with do absolutely crazy things, get A Dog\u2019s Breakfast! Paul told us about what very well may be the funniest scene in the whole piece. Note: Paul had to dress as a woman for a good portion if the film!<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>\u201cDavid Hewlett is lying on the ground, in the mud, naked.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>[Some women in the audience go, \u2018Whoooo!\u2019] No, trust me.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>. . . With soap suds all over his butt, and they have a woman there who has to keep the continuity, and every time it gets a little \u2013 with the rain, maybe the soap suds go away \u2013 she takes some and throws more on his butt. And I\u2019m standing there looking at David, and I\u2019m in my heels, I have an umbrella over me, and they say, \u2018rolling\u2019 and there\u2019s something wrong with the lens so we he have to wait. I\u2019m looking at David, David\u2019s looking at me, and slowly my heels start sinking into the mud.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>And I look at him and I\u2019m like, \u2018David?\u2019 \u2018Yeah, McGillion, what?\u2019 I\u2019m like, \u2018This better be funny\u2019.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>He goes, \u2018you\u2019re telling <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">me!<\/em>\u2019 Yeah, thanks David!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\"><em>How did you find out they were going to kill Carson?<\/em> \u201cThey brought me up to the office. They said, \u2018Here\u2019s the deal\u2019. They \u2013 the powers that be, the producers \u2013 they said, \u2018listen, we\u2019re switching things up, we\u2019re going to mix things up a little bit. We\u2019re going to kill that character\u2019. I\u2019m like, \u201c<em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">that\u2019s<\/em>a big mix up\u2019. It took me by surprise, to be honest with you, and I think a lot of people. But they run a television show, they do things for reasons unbeknownst to a lot of us, and then they decide to bring you back for other reasons, so they do give you notice. I had the script, I read the script. I actually shot that episode, and then shot subsequent episodes after that. Because it aired out of sequence because of the timing, so that was sort of difficult. I had to have a chat with the crew and say, \u2018listen, it\u2019s all good\u2019, because I didn\u2019t want them to have to walk on eggshells around me, and be that kind if actor. It\u2019s been a great opportunity for me, and hopefully there will be other things as well, so that\u2019s kind of how you\u2019ve got to look at it as far as acting goes. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\"><em>Do you know any of their reasons for why they killed Carson?<\/em> \u201cNot particularly, no I don\u2019t. That\u2019s more of a question for the producers rather than me, and I think they\u2019ll be here tomorrow so you can throw that one at them.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">We LOVE to hear about pranks, don\u2019t we? \u201cThere was one between me and the guy right up there (points out Joe Flanigan\u2019s banner on the wall, and then imitates Joe, saying) \u2018Hey Pauly! What\u2019s up, man?\u2019 We were doing a scene so we went to the [a word or words I couldn\u2019t catch] forest. It\u2019s it\u2019s one of the set tour things. The Forest. Up there. Where a lot of the planets are. I don\u2019t know if you know that or not, but they\u2019re up there. Joe Flanigan thought he\u2019d be really funny. David Hewlett and I are doing this scene, I forget which episode it was. [Someone shouts \u2018Duet\u2019, but I didn\u2019t think that was right] Was it \u2018Duet\u2019? We were carrying these guys in these stretchers, and we\u2019re going through the forest. I don\u2019t think it was \u2018Duet\u2019, I\u2019m not sure. Was it \u2018Duet\u2019? [Someone shouts \u2018Phantoms\u2019] \u2018Phantoms\u2019! That was the episode! Yes, you\u2019re right. \u2018Phantoms\u2019.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Good one. (Pointing at the woman who shouted \u2018Phantoms\u2019) Ok, you\u2019re going to win one of these things over here for that. And I\u2019ll sign it for you too. And I\u2019ll see if I can get Joe to sign it too. That will be up to him. It\u2019s my call sheet for the episode \u2018Instinct\u2019.\u201d Yep, that\u2019s what can happen when you know your episodes and the actors <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">don\u2019t!<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">\u201cOk, so we\u2019ve got these stretchers that they made out of wood. The prop department make them out of wood. The handles on the stretchers are huge so you can\u2019t really grab them. And of course it\u2019s David Hewlett and myself carrying, \u2013 and I think Joe set this up because once it\u2019s set up you need to keep with continuity \u2013 the <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">biggest extra possible<\/em> on the stretcher. It\u2019s a really hot day. I have a backpack on as Beckett always does, all my gear on, the flak vest, and David is crying, whining like he does. I am too, but maybe not as much as him. And I made sure that David got the part of the wood that was a little thicker than mine, so we can barely pick this guy up, and David is like, \u2018(doing a passable imitation of David) Do we have to get the biggest guy?\u2019 This guy was a big fellow, and he was like, \u2018I\u2019m sorry!\u2019 Joe is laughing because we\u2019re whining and we have to walk down this hill. And then Joe though it would be funny if throughout the day, as we keep on doing this scene, every time the props guys would take my bag off after every take \u2013 we\u2019d take it off right away \u2013 Joe would add a rock into my bag. By the end of the day the bag probably has 35, 40 pounds of rocks in it. Which I don\u2019t know, I just thing I\u2019m getting tired. And Joe would walk by and go, \u2018(he does a <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">good <\/em>imitation of Joe!) Paul, you got a little sweat there, buddy? You look like you\u2019re working up a sweat, buddy!\u2019 I\u2019m like, \u2018Thanks, Joe, it\u2019s cuz we\u2019ve got this huge guy.\u2019 \u2018(imitating Joe) Yeah!\u2019 Nice! So then Joe leaves and tells the props guy after he leaves \u2013 because I have another scene \u2013 \u2018(imitating Joe) Tell Pauly to look in his bag after he finishes\u2019. And he says, \u2018Joe wants you to look in your nap sack, there\u2019s something in there for you\u2019.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>There was. But it ain\u2019t over. Ask him about that. (In his accent, mutters) Cheeky prick.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\"><em>Got any funny set stories?<\/em>\u201cOff the top of my head, one funny one that we did, the episodes called \u2018Irresistible\u2019. Joe Flanigan and I &#8211; you can ask him about this. It got cut out, by the way. I thought it was very funny. The scene where I\u2019m in the puddle jumper with Joe and I\u2019m crying because Lucius has the drug on me, and Joe punches me and says, \u2018buck up, Carson!\u2019 One of the takes, I\u2019m handcuffed and my nose was running, and I went on so much that I said to Joe, \u2018(In accent) Could you get my nose for me?\u2019 and Joe blows my nose! And I\u2019m like, \u2018Thank you!\u2019 and he\u2019s like, \u2018ok.\u2019 But they didn\u2019t keep it in, and I thought it was really funny. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">\u201cOne other little quick one was Rachel Luttrell was up in a tree in that same episode, and Jason Momoa, myself, David, Joe, are all underneath the tree. She thought it would be good, \u2018maybe I\u2019ll just get up in the tree and kinda hang out here\u2019. That\u2019s what Teyla does, she climes trees. So between every single take, just before the camera starts rolling, we\u2019re throwing rocks and twigs at her the <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">entire time<\/em>. She was so mad at us. She was like,\u2019 Stop it! I\u2019m trying to act here!\u2019 and I\u2019m like, \u2018(in accent) I\u2019m Teyla. I climb trees.\u2019 It was awesome. She\u2019s fun to tease.\u201d Hmmm, we\u2019ll have to ask her about this, Chicago Con attendees! <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">Phew! Paul spent more time talking than some of the previous guest, and I had a hard time keeping up so sadly I don\u2019t have as much for Paul as some of the other guest. But never fear! Paul with be attending the Chicago Convention as well as DragonCon, <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">both<\/em> of which will be covered live by the Wormhole Riders Team! <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">Next, he\u2019s the kind of guy that just gets in the team\u2019s way, and he thinks he knows a lot more than you do. In other words, he\u2019s a pain in the mikta. Yet Robert Picardo has a pretty large fan following, and you\u2019ll soon see why.
