Welcome back Stargate SG-1<\/a> and David DeLuise<\/a> admirers! <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

When David DeLuise<\/a> was a teenager, he was a hardcore Deadhead. He saw the Grateful Dead a whopping 50 times in concert. He recognizes something of his own experience in that of Stargate<\/a> fans \u2013 how they fell head over heels for the family of characters on the show and then built a fan family in real life.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think what\u2019s happened is the fans have made their own family, so it\u2019s not so much about seeing us; it\u2019s about seeing each other,\u201d<\/em> says DeLuise. \u201cEvery time they come to a convention, they\u2019re seeing their friends. I think you have a lot of very unique people who are individuals and sometimes when you\u2019re an individual, it\u2019s very hard to be in society because they\u2019re expected to conform, and I think a lot of people here have a common interest in a show, and yes, it\u2019s a great show, yes, it\u2019s a lot of fun, but I think they\u2019re interacting with each other \u2013 like when I was a kid, I\u2019d follow the Grateful Dead. They were great concerts, but I didn\u2019t go to 50 concerts just because of the music.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

DeLuise\u2019s first experience with science fiction occurred when he was a kid and his big brother Peter (a veteran actor and director in his own right who directed 56 episodes of Stargate SG-1<\/a>) introduced him to the Original Series Star Trek. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Says DeLuise: \u201cPeter is five years older than me, so I\u2019m watching what he\u2019s forcing me to watch, and I just got hooked.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

DeLuise remembers watching blooper reels that his father \u2013 comedy icon Dom DeLuise \u2013 brought home thanks to connections at Desilu Productions, which produced the original series.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe got to see all the blooper reels where Leonard Nimoy is saying \u2013 remember, it\u2019s the 60s \u2013 \u2018Hey, baby, don\u2019t worry, I screwed up this one, too,\u2019\u201d<\/em> he recalls. \u201cYou can see how many times the people ran into the doors, because the guys are just pulling the doors, and people would just run into them.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Watching those early episodes of Star Trek (and the reels) made DeLuise love sci-fi all the more.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On Stargate SG-1<\/a>, DeLuise\u2019s character, Pete Shanahan, \u201cwas not so much in the science fiction world.\u201d<\/em> Pete appeared for four episodes as Sam Carter\u2019s love interest \u2013 and it\u2019s somewhat fitting that his big brother Peter, who\u2019d introduced him to science fiction all those years ago, welcomed him to the set, albeit with some gentle sibling ribbing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI came to the area to start the show,<\/em> and Peter said, \u2018You know, you have to act like a grown-up,\u2019 and I go, \u2018Yeah, I know,\u2019 and he said, \u2018But really, you have to act like a grown-up,\u2019 and I said, \u2018I get it, Peter! I have two kids, a mortgage.\u2019\u201d He chuckles. \u201cIn his eyes, I wasn\u2019t a grown-up.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

When it came to the Sam and Jack ship on Stargate<\/a>, DeLuise added, \u201cYou know, I think the thing that is good about the character of Pete Shanahan is he made Jack and Sam really realize that they did want to be together. I think it’s great, I like that, whether people react negatively or positively, they were emotionally connected to it. At another convention, a lot of girls were like: I don\u2019t like Pete Shanahan, but I like you, which was very sweet. And then I told them; they should come to my room. No, I\u2019m just kidding!\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

DeLuise, who’s latest television appearances are on the hit Showtime series Shameless<\/a> and Velvet Prozak<\/a> on Amazon Prime Video<\/a>, is also fondly remembered for a beloved series that he co-starred in, and directed, seven episodes of, Disney\u2019s Wizards of Waverly Place<\/a>\u00a0 now featured on Disney Plus<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

David DeLuise<\/a> has fond memories of working with Amanda Tapping<\/a> (\u201cShe\u2019s just amazing. I\u2019m a big fan of hers. She\u2019s so lovely and talented\u201d<\/em>) and of his character, Pete Shanahan. \u201cI got to be a grown-up,\u201d he says. \u201cI got to have a romantic thing rather than just being a dad going, \u2018What are you crazy kids doing?\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
