<\/span><\/span><\/a>\"GoldenGateBridge-SF-crop\"<\/a>I was very much looking forward to <\/span><\/span> <\/span>t<\/span><\/span>he Alternative Press Exposi<\/a><\/span><\/span>tion<\/a> in San Francisco! The name alone, Alter<\/span><\/span>native<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Press<\/span><\/span> Ex<\/span><\/span>position, brings to mind a virtual revolution in how the press ex<\/span><\/span>ists<\/span><\/span>. As we ne<\/span><\/span>ar the end of the first decade o<\/span><\/span>\"apehdr_r1_c1\"<\/a>f the twenty-first <\/span><\/span>century such to<\/span><\/span>pics become more important a<\/span><\/span>s <\/span><\/span>we see many giants of<\/span><\/span> t<\/span><\/span>h<\/span><\/span>e traditional news and magazine industry fall by the <\/span><\/span>wa<\/span><\/span>yside during these tough and <\/span><\/span>uncompromising economic times! Accompanying me on my journey into the world of Alternative Press was a native San Franciscan, an old newspaperman himself, my dear 83 year old father<\/span><\/span>! <\/span><\/span>\"AltPressExpo2009-01\"<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Known as \u201cMr. Newspaper\u201d in our family (because he religiously reads the papers eve<\/span><\/span> <\/span>ry day and there are stacks of them everywhere in his house), Dad was also interested in the concept of Alternative Press. For Dad the news is either in print or it simply does not exist! The only analog today would be the electronic content our generation has on hand held computers, PDA\u2019s, cell phones and other mobile computing devices. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

No matter what anyone says about Alternative Press, the comics and stories are almost always available in print and that is a very good thing as far as traditionalists and people from my father\u2019s generation are concerned. Dad was quite happy about the n<\/span><\/span>\"AltPressExpo2009-02-Dad\"<\/a><\/span><\/span>ew Alternative <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Press becau<\/span><\/span>se comics were basically epic to his youth! To young people in the 1920\u2019s and 1930\u2019s, comics were of the same social impact as radio and going to the movies!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nTo say Dad is a newspaper person is being truthful \u2026 in a sense. But saying so may also be a bit of an exaggeration. You see, it all depends on how you think about newspaper \u201cpeople\u201d. In Dad\u2019s case, he actually sold newspapers like The San Francisco Chronicle and San Francisco Examiner on street corners during the Great Depression! <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

According to Dad, The Depression was a time when a newsboy had to \u201cfight\u201d for their turf and sometimes for their very survival. Dad tells stories about the fights he often had to get the best corners in San Francisco to sell his newspapers. We drove past several of these street corners on our way to the convention which brought back vivid memories. You see way back in the early 1930\u2019s, a newspaper sold for just five (5) cents, and he got to keep 1 cent for each paper he sold. That was very good money in those days considering a loaf of bread was two cents, and even less, only 1 cent if it was day old!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
